The story so far...

In 2021, Derby City Council and Arup published Establishing a regional hydrogen roadmap in Derby and the wider region - findings and recommendations. It identified five main areas where the D2N2 (Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire) region should look to drive investment in hydrogen:

  1. Production, distribution and storage

  2. Heating

  3. Transport

  4. Industry

  5. Jobs, skills and research

The D2N2 Hydrogen Taskforce was established on the back of the report, and that group has now become East Midlands Hydrogen.

Pile Of Rocks In Dusk Landscape

In the same year, Cadent launched its East Coast Hydrogen plan for a 100% hydrogen pipeline that transports low carbon hydrogen from the Humber to industry throughout the East Midlands. The enormous scale of demand for hydrogen from industry in the East Midlands Hydrogen cluster has enabled Cadent to intensify focus on the region, and has led to local hydrogen production plans increasing in scale.

This fuel switching alone would abate:

Co2

1.9 million tonnes
of co2 per year...

Natural Gas

... which is equivalent to
natural gas consumed by
860,000 homes every year

These 70 sites emit 61% of all the CO2 emissions for industrial, commercial and power generation gas demand in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and northern Leicestershire. Switching to low carbon hydrogen could abate these emissions.

The bigger picture

East Midlands Hydrogen is part of a wider Midlands network on hydrogen showcased in the 2022 Midlands Hydrogen Technologies Strategy; including Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham and the Humber Region in northern Lincolnshire. We will work with our partners in all places and all sectors to ensure that learning from East Midlands Hydrogen is shared, and that we in turn learn from and adopt best-in-class practice happening elsewhere.

We will support development of a Net Zero investment plan for the emerging East Midlands Combined County Authority, so that our new Mayor has a comprehensive strategy and investment portfolio from commencement in the role and can demonstrate a compelling, data driven and evidence based case for investment.
